Commentary

A masterpiece of intricate red-glazed detailing. Fukushima Takeyama's limited edition "16-size large bowl with small pattern"

This magnificent piece features an intricately patterned small motif covering the entire surface of a large bowl measuring 48cm in diameter. At first glance, it appears to be a beautiful, orderly arrangement of geometric shapes, but upon closer inspection, one is astonished to discover that it is actually a mind-boggling accumulation of extremely fine lines. Although it is a single red color, the profound shades created by varying the density and strength of the lines and the use of different brushstrokes give the impression of a richness of color that is hard to believe is a single color.

Akae saigaki (decorative painting) is a technique in which patterns are created by densely packing lines sometimes as thin as a hair. This delicate technique, known as "superb skill," is applied to every corner of such a huge bowl, requiring not only exceptional skill but also extraordinary mental strength. The contrast between the overwhelming scale and the extreme detail creates a majestic presence that leaves viewers speechless.

Fukushima Takeyama, a leading expert in Akae (red porcelain) detailing, has revived this technique, which was once on the verge of extinction. This work, measuring an impressive 16cm in size, is a museum-quality masterpiece that embodies his passion and skill.

The viewer is overwhelmed, yet at the same time feels a gentle, enveloping comfort, perhaps because Takeyama's sincere personality is embodied in the hand-drawn lines. The sophisticated composition that harmonizes the traditional "komonte" design with modern spaces is truly a state of mind that only he can achieve. Perhaps there is no other work that is more aptly described as "detailed and graceful."

Fukushima Takeyama

A leading expert in detailed red-glazed painting.
A fascinating world of red created by extremely fine lines

Akae saibyo is a superb technique of drawing patterns and pictures with extremely fine lines using the red of Bengara. In the long history of Kutani ware, this Akae saibyo (Sano Akae) technique was once on the verge of being discontinued, but it was Fukushima Takeyama who revived it.
The intricate patterns and the strength and weakness of the lines create a rich, deep and gorgeous overglaze design, captivating the viewer despite being a single red color. His works are immensely popular in Japan and highly regarded around the world.
He has also produced many disciples, who are also active in the industry.
