Multiplying Java Sparrows - A Microscopic World and the Coexistence of Personalities
This fantastical piece, crafted uniquely by hand-building, features a flock of Java sparrows, stars, and gilded ellipses, all intertwined. At first glance, it appears to be a lively work showcasing adorable Java sparrows gathering, but its true concept is surprisingly original.
The artist, with a background as a veterinarian, once delved into the depths of life through microscopic cell examinations. The "overwhelming energy of multiplying cells" observed there, combined with the "Java sparrows" that the artist deeply loves, are fused in this work. Here, the Java sparrows are depicted as a metaphor for "tumor cells."
The title of the work, "Buncho-ma," is a portmanteau of "buncho" (Java sparrow) and "-oma," a suffix meaning tumor in medical terminology. Behind the endearing name, the truth of life is subtly hidden.
The Energy of Multiplication
Java sparrows with two beaks reminiscent of nuclear fission, and others behaving freely with wild, staring eyes. What we see here is the overwhelming vitality of cells that multiply continuously, disregarding existing rules. Just like cells invading their surroundings, each sparrow emits a strong individuality, depicting the very essence of "cells multiplying and raging as they please."
Fragments of Daily Life
Upon closer inspection, we see some holding fans, engrossed in cheering for their idols; others enjoying roasted sweet potatoes; some munching on rice balls; and others celebrating Halloween. The Java sparrows revel in their freedom. According to the artist, this piece was painted in October 2025. The Java sparrows are enjoying autumn, and it's interesting how the work reflects the social climate, given that the rice riots also occurred in autumn 2025.
Drama of Life
The gilded ellipses represent "cross-sections of blood vessels," expressing the dynamism of cells transferring to new locations through them. Furthermore, "T killer cells" that hunt tumors are depicted as cats. The idea is to portray the inherently cute Java sparrows as "tumors," and the "attackers (T killer cells)" that should be terrifying to tumors as cats. This immunological worldview is depicted with cynicism.
Within the framework of traditional Kutani ware, the microscopic world of cells is expressed through Java sparrows. The intense individuality overflowing from the artist's inner self and background intertwines with the meticulous depiction of each sparrow, creating a masterpiece that exudes unique charm.
