Commentary

"Covered Pedestal Dish: Iroe Kinran Hanazume" by Taka Toshifumi.
Taka Toshifumi is one of the few contemporary artists inheriting the style of Kutani Shoza, a legendary master who flourished from the late Edo to Meiji periods.
Kutani Shoza's artistic style mastered every overglaze decoration technique of Kutani ware—including gorgeous "Saishiki Kinrande" using vivid colors and abundant gold accents, intricate "Akae Saibyo" rendered solely in red, and fine detailed depictions of flowers, birds, figures, and landscapes with delicate brushwork. Shoza's Kutani ware received high acclaim and gained great popularity abroad, driving the wave of Japonisme.
Artists inheriting Shoza's style today are exceptionally rare, as it represents a realm attainable only by mastering every single Kutani decorative technique. Among them, Taka Toshifumi stands out for his undeniable technical precision and expressive power, releasing numerous works of high artistic completion. Having observed his painting process firsthand, one is awed by the swiftness of his brushwork and the beauty of the finished result. Every glance at his work inspires admiration for his masterly composition and elevated sense of aesthetic.
This piece is a pedestal dish crafted with a lid—an elevated vessel set upon a foot. Both the lid and dish are densely covered in gorgeous, exquisite flowers embellished with radiant gold accents. While the intricacy of composition and richness of color are overwhelming, an indescribable elegance quietly floats throughout. The vivid firing of overglaze colors makes you want to gaze at it endlessly.

Selected for the Japan New Craft Exhibition for the first time (subsequently selected consecutively).

(Heisei 7)		 Won the Hokkoku Award at the Contemporary Art Exhibition.
2003
(Heisei 15)		 Appointed as a judge for the Japan New Craft Exhibition.
Won the Hazama Memorial Award at the 67th Issuikai Exhibition.

(Heisei 19/20)		 Received the Fine Work Award at the Issuikai Exhibition.

(Heisei 23)		 Selected for the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition.
