Work introduction

Commentary

"Praying Mantis" was created by Taka Sobun, one of the leading contemporary Kutani artists.
Taka Satoshifumi, who inherits the traditions of Kutani ware such as "Saishiki Kinrande" and "Hanazumi," is one of the most notable artists today, expressing insects and animals with a modern sensibility. His meticulous brushwork goes beyond craftsmanship and has a powerful impact, as if a life were dwelling within the vessel.

This work skillfully captures the sharp posture and overflowing strength of the mantis, and even gives the impression of agility and quiet vitality, as if it could spring into action at any moment. The "kinrande" painting, which uses gold as the main color, vividly brings out the beauty of the mantis's body, giving it an unparalleled sense of splendor and luxury.

A major feature of this work is the fusion of ceramic and metal. The painted parts such as the head, front legs and wings are made of ceramic, while the four legs supporting the body are made of custom-made brass from Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. The contrast between the delicate and gorgeous Kutani painting and the solid brass creates a sense of harmony between these different materials, adding a modern and profound charm to the work.

Takashi is one of the few remaining artists who have faithfully inherited the style of the master Kutani Shozo, who once captivated the world and led the Japonism movement. From "Saishiki Kinrande," featuring vibrant colors and gold accents, to "Akae Saigai," which requires virtuosity, Takashi's highly artistic expression, which is only possible because he has mastered the various techniques of Kutani ware, shines through in every corner.

Taka's true strength lies not only in the painting but also in his completely custom-made style, which involves working on everything from the design of the base to the final product. The combination of traditional techniques, the beauty of nature's forms, and the contrast between different materials creates an overwhelming worldview, resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind, rare masterpiece.
