Commentary

An ambitious creation by Kutani master Taka Toshifumi: "Kabutomushi - Kutani Lagoon."
Contemplating the artwork while pondering its creative name, "Kutani Lagoon," adds a deeper layer of beauty to the piece. Normally, the rhinoceros beetle is the king of the forest, symbolizing "land" such as earth and trees. By pairing it with the word "lagoon" (a clear body of water or inland bay), perhaps the artist likened its carapace to a "mystical water surface shifting colors with reflected light." The radiance emitted by this piece is dreamlike enough to stir such imagination.

Mr. Taka is one of the rare successors who legitimately carries on the style of Kutani Shoza, a legendary master who once fascinated the world and drove Japonisme. Mastering various Kutani techniques ranging from "Saishiki Kinrande" (vivid colors dancing with gold accents) to "Akae Saibyo" (ultra-fine red brushwork) requiring supreme virtuosity, his highly artistic expression shines brilliantly throughout the piece.

The main highlight of this piece—the hand-painted design on its back—brilliantly displays Mr. Taka's master skill. Classical patterns such as diamonds, fish scales, and seigaiha (ocean waves) are exquisitely painted using his signature Kinrande technique. The gradient of "blue" (green), one of the Kutani Five Colors, combined with the starring gold accents radiates a noble, gemstone-like luster.
There is zero compromise in its sculptural form; employing brass for detailed sections such as the leg tips adds a refined weight and dignity to the work.
