Work introduction

Commentary

"Rhinoceros Beetle Kutani Lagoon" is an ambitious piece created by the master of Kutani ware, Taka Satoshi.
When you look at the work while thinking about the unique name "Kutani Lagoon," its beauty becomes even more profound. The rhinoceros beetle, the king of the forest, originally symbolizes "land" such as earth and wood. By combining this with the word "lagoon" (clear waters/inland sea), perhaps the beetle's shell is likened to "a mysterious water surface that changes color with the reflection of light." The brilliance of this work is so fantastical that it stirs such imaginations.

Takashi is one of the rare legitimate heirs to the style of the master Kutani Shozo, who captivated the world and led the Japonism movement. From "Saishiki Kinrande," featuring vibrant colors and gold, to "Akae Saigai," which requires virtuosity, Takashi's highly artistic expression, which is only possible because he has mastered the various techniques of Kutani, shines through in every detail.

The highlight of this piece is the painting on the back, where Taka's high level of skill shines through. Classical motifs such as diamonds, scales, and waves, called "seigaiha," are intricately painted using his signature gold brocade technique. The combination of the gradation of blue (green), one of the five Kutani colors, and the dominant gold paint gives off a noble brilliance like a jewel.
There is no compromise in the design, and brass is used for details such as the feet, giving the piece just the right amount of weight.

This highly refined piece was acquired through a special connection and is a precious masterpiece that can be said to be the pinnacle of modern Kutani ware.
