An ambitious large-scale work created by overcoming self-doubt. As a bird lover, the artist chose the legendary auspicious bird "Phoenix"—a motif perfectly matched to the grand scale of this vessel.
The greatest highlight of this piece is the figure of the phoenix at its center, radiating an overwhelming presence.
Pay particular attention to the brushwork in gosu (underglaze cobalt) defining the feathers. The artist deliberately varied the line thickness, interweaving thick and thin strokes. This rhythmic variation gives the static pattern a vivid sense of dynamism, as if soaring forcefully through the sky. The undulating thick lines evoke an inviolable aura fitting for a sacred entity, emanating an awe-inspiring, majestic divinity that holds the viewer spellbound.
With the phoenix at its core, red floral patterns and scenes reminiscent of a night sky unfold in concentric circles around it. Strikingly vivid against the matte black background, these red floral motifs were reportedly a pattern the artist was particularly captivated by during the creation of this piece.
The texture of the vessel serving as this canvas reflects the artist's meticulous dedication. Boldly shaped by hand-building (tebineri), the surface bears distinct, organic indentations left by the artist's fingers. Adorning these spontaneous contours with gold and platinum accents was a daring venture that creates subtle, atmospheric shadows when catching the light. Its luster carries a solemn weight well-suited to the phoenix's divinity.
Furthermore, meticulous details such as the rugged rock-like texture rendered on the back of the vessel solidify her unique worldview beyond doubt.
