Visually Expressing the Lively Chirping of Birds and Serene Silence
At first glance, it appears as a sleek, modern design. Yet the moment you look closer, the scene that unfolds is guaranteed to take your breath away: a vibrant flock of adorable birds, painted with such density as if to fill the entire surface, comes alive before your eyes.
The defining feature of this work lies in its unique compositional beauty.
Hand-built by the artist and meticulously faceted, the multifaceted form of the vessel is used to unfold two contrasting worlds alternating in striped sections.
A tightly packed flock of birds. Front views, side profiles, rear angles, and the exact moment of taking flight—each individual bird carries a distinct expression, pressing forth with overwhelming density.
In contrast, against a matte black background, red floral motifs—a favorite of the artist at the time—offer a relaxed, breathing space that drifts with a sense of calm against the dense bird illustrations.
This intricate detail is born through a painstaking process.
First, the outline of each bird is drawn using gosu (underglaze cobalt), after which the artist paints "one color at a time" using three to four of her favorite shades.
"Once purple is done, move to the next color..."
Carefully placing colors one by one while ensuring adjacent birds do not share the same hue, this exacting manual labor—described by the artist as feeling "endless midway through"—endows the piece with exceptional depth and authenticity.
Encapsulating the artist's meticulous passion, this piece flawlessly fuses high craft technique with pictorial sensibility. We invite you to experience up close the harmony woven between this overwhelming density and the tranquil grace of the contrasting flowers.
