Work introduction

Commentary

Visually Expressing the Lively Chirping of Birds and Silence

At first glance, it appears to be a sophisticated modern design. However, the moment you look closer, a breathtaking scene unfolds. It's teeming with a flock of adorable birds, drawn in such detail that they nearly fill the entire surface.

The most distinctive feature of this work lies in its unique compositional beauty.
The artist hand-built and carefully chamfered the clay. Utilizing its multi-faceted form, two distinct worlds unfold in alternating stripes.
A dense flock of birds. Front, side, back views, and moments of flight. Each bird has a different expression, creating an overwhelming sense of density.
In contrast to the dense bird imagery, the matte black background features a red floral pattern that the artist reportedly favored at the time, creating a relaxed, breathable atmosphere.

This meticulous expression is born through an incredibly arduous process.
First, the artist outlines each bird with gosu (cobalt pigment), then proceeds to paint them "one color at a time" using 3 to 4 colors, which are said to be the artist's favorites.
"Once I finish the purple, I move on to the next color..."
Carefully applying each color, ensuring that adjacent birds are not the same color if possible. This incredibly painstaking craftsmanship, which the artist himself describes as "feeling endless halfway through," gives the work its unparalleled depth and persuasive power.

This work, a condensation of the artist's dedication, is a masterpiece that perfectly fuses high technical skill as a craft with a painterly aesthetic. We invite you to experience the harmony woven by its overwhelming density and the contrasting spaciousness of the flowers up close.

Artist introduction

Saori Yamaura

Saori Yamaura

Breathing life into the warmth of hand-formed ceramics.

An artist who infuses the traditional craft of Kutani ware with vivid sensibility and new life. She possesses a highly unusual background in the world of Kutani ware, having worked as a veterinarian.

Her world, depicted from a unique perspective and centered around the "birds" she deeply loves, instantly captivates viewers.

Please enjoy the sculptural beauty that emanates warmth, created through hand-forming without molds. Adorning these forms are rich, vibrant, yet gentle colors, and at times, the breathtaking wonder of overglaze enamels.
